What Is Reflexology?

Understanding the practice, its benefits, and the Flocco Method.

How Reflexology Works

Reflexology is an integrative practice that maps the reflection of the body onto the feet, hands, and outer ears. It uses unique manual techniques to deliver pressure to neural pathways, assisting the body optimally by opening the vital channels within these pathways. Clients living with the after-effects of stroke and with respiratory conditions have come to me for sessions, as well as people dealing with anxiety, fatigue, and depression. A reflexology session may be just what you need to get back on your feet.

Reflexology is often grouped with acupressure and other pressure-point therapies. The difference is that reflexology works only from maps of the feet, hands, and outer ears — and, unlike acupuncture, it involves no needles and nothing that penetrates the skin.

You may be wondering how I have helped my clients. What reflexology does is promote wellness by stimulating the nerves in your body and encouraging the flow of blood. By doing this I can reduce your source of pain and relieve the adverse effects of symptoms. Reflexology is meant to promote wellness and is also a form of preventative therapy.

Reflexology is a well-established, therapeutic method of relieving pain, anxiety and illness by stimulating specific areas of the hands, feet, and ears. Reflexologists work from maps that show which pressure point connects to which specific organs or muscles. This specialized technique is an ancient form of healing. There is evidence in Egypt and China that reflexology was used as early as 2450 B.C. More recently, in the 1890's reflexology was extensively researched in England, Germany, and Russia.

A 75 minute reflexology session covers all areas of reflexology including hands, feet, and ears. A 60 minute session touches on just feet and hands. A 50 minute session touches on just feet. Once you come in for several appointments, I can even teach you simple manipulations to help you maintain your health at home.

The Health Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology is often valued highly due to the positive effects its application has on various ailments and injuries. Reflexology is a form of alternative medicine that encourages a non-invasive, natural healing process. Applied through the hands, feet, and ears, reflexology is non-invasive and drug-free, and many clients come to it for that reason.

The Flocco Method

I started AJ's Reflexology partly because I wanted to bring the Flocco method to the Bay Area where I live. The Flocco technique was a large part of my education at The American Academy of Reflexology. My world renowned instructor, Bill Flocco, created and taught the Flocco method all over the world. He is also the founder of my school and has over 30 years of experience in the field of reflexology.

Bill Flocco's interest in reflexology may well have been started by his mother. After extensive surgeries, she was in constant pain and would often ask Bill to rub her feet. Following every foot rub, young Mr. Flocco began to notice that not only did his mother's feet feel much better; her whole body did, inside and out. Thus his curiosity was aroused and after years of study he created the Flocco method.

The Flocco methods are unique because they integrate hands, feet, and ears — and these are the main techniques I use in my reflexology sessions. The techniques taught by Bill Flocco allow for all three reflexology areas to be worked with in one session with no compromise in the effectiveness of the method.

Before the Flocco method, often a patient would not get the full benefit of a reflexology session without extensive and costly reflexology sessions. Now, I can offer shorter and more affordable sessions with no concessions that could be costly to your health.

Many clients start with two or three sessions to see how their body responds, then continue at whatever interval suits them, supported by simple self-administered reflexology techniques they can use at home. Everyone is different, and people with serious illness or chronic conditions usually come in over a longer period.

My goal is to help you with your problems, and as a Flocco practitioner, I can help you breathe better, feel better, and live better.

If you have questions or concerns feel free to send me an email. I will do my best to answer any questions you have, or make any accommodations that your circumstances may require.
